Glove Thickness Explained: 3mil vs 5mil vs 7mil+

Not all disposable gloves are built the same. One of the biggest differences between gloves — and one of the most misunderstood — is thickness. Glove thickness is measured in mils (one mil = one-thousandth of an inch) and directly affects durability, protection, and feel.

 

Choosing the right thickness means fewer tears, better performance, and lower cost per job.

What Does “Mil” Mean?

A mil is a unit of measurement used to describe glove thickness.

For example:

  • 3mil = 0.003 inches thick
  • 5mil = 0.005 inches thick
  • 7mil = 0.007 inches thick

3mil Gloves

Best for light-duty, high-volume tasks


3mil gloves are thin and lightweight, designed for jobs where dexterity and frequent glove changes are more important than durability.

Best all-around option for most professional work


5mil gloves strike a balance between strength and flexibility, making them the most popular choice for mechanics and industrial users.

Pros

  • Stronger tear and puncture resistance
  • Still flexible enough for precision work
  • Good protection against oils and chemicals
  • Comfortable for moderate wear times

Cons

  • Slightly reduced dexterity vs 3mil
  • Costs more than light-duty gloves

Common Uses:

Automotive repair, maintenance, painting, shop work, general industrial use

7mil+ Gloves

Best for heavy-duty, high-risk environments


7mil and thicker gloves are built for maximum protection. These gloves are tougher, longer-lasting, and designed for demanding jobs where glove failure is not an option.

Pros

  • Highest puncture and tear resistance
  • Superior chemical and fluid protection
  • Longer wear time per pair
  • Better grip in oily environments

Cons

  • Reduced finger sensitivity
  • Can cause hand fatigue during long wear
  • Higher cost per box

Heavy mechanical work, chemical handling, oil & gas, manufacturing, industrial cleaning

Thickness vs Cost: The Real Equation

Thinner gloves are cheaper per box — but thicker gloves often last longer, meaning fewer glove changes during a job.

In many cases:

A higher-mil glove costs less per job, even if it costs more per box.

That’s why many professionals prefer 5mil or 7mil gloves for daily work.

Choosing the Right Thickness

Ask yourself:

  • Are sharp edges or tools involved?
  • Will I be handling oil, fuel, or chemicals?
  • Do I need precision or maximum protection?
  • How often do I change gloves during a job?

Quick rule of thumb:

  • Light work → 3mil
  • Most shop work → 5mil
  • Heavy-duty tasks → 7mil+
